SUMMARY:Counter Histories: Rock Hill at SLO Film Fest\, San Luis Obispo
DESCRIPTION:The NAACP is one of the proud sponsors of the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival to be held March 13-18\, 2018. The film is Counter Histories: Rock Hill and provides a more complete historical backdrop to civil rights and the movement. There will be three screenings and individual tickets will be sold at the door. The film festival “Movie Star Pass” holders will be admitted first. Please join us at any of the three screenings with the Saturday (3/17) screening being our NAACP and Unity of SLO’s time to see the movie as a collective. Please join us then. Movie Star Passes and ticket information can be found at the SLO Film Fest website. \n\n\n\nSynopsis:\nIt’s 1961 and the Civil Rights movement is stalled with protest after protest\, arrest after arrest\, in the segregated South. Students at a small local Baptist college in Rock Hill\, South Carolina\, decide to sit in at their local lunch counter. They get arrested\, go to jail and remain there. Their action brings the national attention the movement seeks and becomes an important incident in the social justice movement. With excellent reenactments and creative visuals\, Counter Histories: Rock Hill breaks with documentary conventions to connect with a new audience and tie the historical movement to present day struggles. 56 min. \nPresented by Preston Allen of NAACP SLO County branch/SLO Unity \nClick Here to Learn More\nAll showings of this movie:\nThursday\, March 15 – 4:30 – Downtown Cinemas\nFriday\, March 16 – 10am – Downtown Cinemas\nSaturday\, March 17 – 1:30pm – Downtown Cinemas

SUMMARY:Seven Essential Pathways to Inner Peace—The Power of Forgiveness II\, San Luis Obispo
DESCRIPTION:Part of the NAACP’s mission is to “provide educational and social action activities associated with the improvement of race relations.” One of the most powerful ways we can improve our relations with others is to generate positive changes within ourselves. As Mahatma Gandhi stated\, “We must become the change we wish to see in our world.” This is the second in a series of workshops based on Leona and Matthew’s book\, The Evolving Peacemaker: A Commitment to Nonviolence\, which was recently honored with the 2017 Evergreen Gold Medal for World Peace presented by the Living Now Book Awards. \nMatthew and Leona\n“Forgiveness is releasing the anger we have inadvertently allowed to poison our souls. It is giving up our need to even the score with those who have wounded us. Forgiveness also involves healing past wounds so that we don’t project our fears and mistrust onto our current relationships and perceive insults when none were intended.” \n\nLeona Evans is a motivational speaker\, educator\, life coach\, and peace activist. She holds a Master of Arts in Religious Studies and has been the minister at Unity of San Luis Obispo for 24 years. Leona is also certified in Conflict Management and Peace building by the United States Institute of Peace.\nMatthew J. Evans is an accomplished actor\, musician\, and filmmaker. He received the Art of Making Peace Award from the Peace in the Streets Global Film Festival\, presented to him at the United Nations third High Level Forum on a Culture of Peace by Former Under- Secretary- General Anwarul Chowdhury.\n\nSunday\, March 11\nUnity of San Luis Obispo\n1130 Orcutt Road\nSan Luis Obispo\n2:00 PM – 3:30 PM
