She is the consulting historian for the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State and National Parks and 125 mile Harriet Tubman Byway\, an All-American Road\, in Maryland\, and has consulted for the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn\, NY. Her second book\, The Assassin’s Accomplice: Mary Surratt and the Plot to Kill Abraham Lincoln\, was released in 2008. Her most recent work\, Rosemary: The Hidden Kennedy Daughter\, about the disabled sister of President John F. Kennedy\, spent ten weeks on the New York Timesbestseller. \nPassionate about researching and writing about American women’s lives\, Larson enjoys the challenges of teasing out life stories from voices that have long been silenced. “I feel strongly that we must reconnect with the women who helped build and shape this country\,” Larson recently wrote\, “and by putting women at the center of the story\, the world looks very different – more complex\, interesting\, and colorful.” Dr. Larson lives in Winchester\, MA. \n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Larson’s appearance is sponsored by the San Luis Obispo Master Chorale. This weekend of talks will conclude with a performance of The Journey of Harriet Tubman\, composed by California resident\, Ron Kean. In addition\, the SLO Master Chorale and Master Chorale Orchestra will perform Johannes Brahms’ masterwork\, Ein deutsches Requiem (a German Requiem). Both works will be conducted by Thomas Davies\, musical director and conductor of the SLO Master Chorale and Professor Emeritus at Cal Poly. \nHarriet Tubman and Johannes Brahms lived during the same period of time\, yet worlds apart. Brahms’ masterwork has been with us for 150 years\, uniting audiences and performers from throughout the world with a work of comfort and hope. Ron Kean’s work is less than 2 years old\, yet it already has had a tremendously inspirational effect on all who have performed and heard this music and learned from the life of this extraordinary woman. \nThe presentations by Kate Larson and Ron Kean are free and open to the public. \nMore info at slomasterchorale.org

We cannot allow one more child to be shot at school. We cannot allow one more teacher to make a choice to jump in front of a firing assault rifle to save the lives of students. We cannot allow one more family to wait for a call or text that never comes. Our schools are unsafe. Our children and teachers are dying. We must make it our top priority to save these lives. \nMarch For Our Lives is created by\, inspired by\, and led by students across the country who will no longer risk their lives waiting for someone else to take action to stop the epidemic of mass school shootings that has become all too familiar. In the tragic wake of the seventeen lives brutally cut short in Florida\, politicians are telling us that now is not the time to talk about guns. March For Our Lives believes the time is now. \nOn March 24\, the kids and families of March For Our Lives will take to the streets of Washington\, DC to demand that their lives and safety become a priority. The collective voices of the March For Our Lives movement will be heard. \nSchool safety is not a political issue. There cannot be two sides to doing everything in our power to ensure the lives and futures of children who are at risk of dying when they should be learning\, playing\, and growing. The mission and focus of March For Our Lives is to demand that a comprehensive and effective bill be immediately brought before Congress to address these gun issues. No special interest group\, no political agenda is more critical than timely passage of legislation to effectively address the gun violence issues that are rampant in our country. \nEvery kid in this country now goes to school wondering if this day might be their last. We live in fear. \nIt doesn’t have to be this way. Change is coming. And it starts now\, inspired by and led by the kids who are our hope for the future. Their young voices will be heard. \nStand with us on March 24. Refuse to allow one more needless death. \nMARCH FOR OUR LIVES!

SUMMARY:Seven Essential Pathways to Inner Peace—The Power of Forgiveness II\, San Luis Obispo
DESCRIPTION:Part of the NAACP’s mission is to “provide educational and social action activities associated with the improvement of race relations.” One of the most powerful ways we can improve our relations with others is to generate positive changes within ourselves. As Mahatma Gandhi stated\, “We must become the change we wish to see in our world.” This is the second in a series of workshops based on Leona and Matthew’s book\, The Evolving Peacemaker: A Commitment to Nonviolence\, which was recently honored with the 2017 Evergreen Gold Medal for World Peace presented by the Living Now Book Awards. \nMatthew and Leona\n“Forgiveness is releasing the anger we have inadvertently allowed to poison our souls. It is giving up our need to even the score with those who have wounded us. Forgiveness also involves healing past wounds so that we don’t project our fears and mistrust onto our current relationships and perceive insults when none were intended.” \n\nLeona Evans is a motivational speaker\, educator\, life coach\, and peace activist. She holds a Master of Arts in Religious Studies and has been the minister at Unity of San Luis Obispo for 24 years. Leona is also certified in Conflict Management and Peace building by the United States Institute of Peace.\nMatthew J. Evans is an accomplished actor\, musician\, and filmmaker. He received the Art of Making Peace Award from the Peace in the Streets Global Film Festival\, presented to him at the United Nations third High Level Forum on a Culture of Peace by Former Under- Secretary- General Anwarul Chowdhury.\n\nSunday\, March 11\nUnity of San Luis Obispo\n1130 Orcutt Road\nSan Luis Obispo\n2:00 PM – 3:30 PM
